Dominion Angelic Order

In classical Christian angelology, Dominions—also called Dominations or Lordships—are celestial beings entrusted with a central governing role within the angelic hierarchy.

Hierarchical Rank

Following the system outlined by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite in the 5th century and later affirmed by St. Thomas Aquinas, Dominions are placed fourth among the nine choirs of angels. They preside at the highest level of the Second Sphere (Middle Triad):

First Sphere (Highest): Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones

Second Sphere (Middle): Dominions, Virtues, Powers

Third Sphere (Lowest): Principalities, Archangels, Guardian Angels

Role and Responsibilities

Dominions serve as divine overseers or administrators, entrusted with maintaining order throughout creation. Their principal functions include:

Oversight: Directing and coordinating the work of lower angelic orders, acting as the conduit between the highest angels who receive God’s designs and those who carry them out in the world.

Cosmic Order: Safeguarding the laws governing nature and the orderly motion of celestial bodies, including stars and planets.

Justice and Mercy: Executing God’s authority with balance, ensuring that judgment is tempered by mercy.

Guidance of Earthly Authority: Offering wisdom and insight to human leaders and rulers to support just and righteous governance.

Symbolic Representation

Dominions are seldom portrayed as interacting directly with humanity. When depicted in art and theology, they are commonly shown with:

Regal Symbols: Crowns and emblems of authority such as golden staffs, scepters, or orbs—often marked with a cross or radiant light.

Human Form: Appearing as radiant, human-like figures with feathered wings.

Calm Presence: Their demeanor is composed and authoritative, emphasizing administration and order rather than martial strength.

Biblical References

Although Scripture does not name individual angels as “Dominions,” the order itself is referenced in the New Testament as part of the spiritual hierarchy:

Colossians 1:16: Listed among thrones, principalities, and powers as part of creation.

Ephesians 1:21: Identified as a rank of authority over which Christ reigns.
